How to get started

Open Google Analytics → click on Admin (the gear icon) in the bottom left.
In the right-hand column, under Data streams, verify that you are editing the correct property where data from your online store is being sent.
Everything below is created once per property. If an object already exists with the correct name, leave it as is (do not create it again).
Custom definitions (both dimensions and metrics) cannot be deleted in GA4 – only archived. Therefore, pay close attention to typos in the Event parameter field. If you make a mistake, simply archive the incorrect definition and create a new one.

Custom dimensions

Where

Admin → Property → Data displayCustom definitionsCustom dimensions tab → Create custom dimension button.
For each row in the table, create one dimension with the following values:
Dimension name
Scope
Event parameter (exactly!)
SR Engine
Event
sr_engine
SR Result Type
Event
sr_result_type
SR Search Term
Event
search_term
SR Action
Event
sr_action

Instructions for a single dimension

  1. Dimension name = the value from the first column (e.g., SR Engine).
  2. Scope = Event (for all four).
  3. Event parameter = the value from the third column – copy it exactly, using lowercase letters and underscores (e.g., sr_engine, not SR engine).
  4. Save.

Note: Create a custom dimension for the search_term parameter exactly as shown in the table. Do not use the native "Search term" (searchTerm) dimension for this – it is only populated by the Enhanced measurement Site search and will not capture search terms from Search Ready. Leave Site search turned off.

Custom metric

Where

Admin → Property → Data displayCustom definitionsCustom metrics tab → Create custom metric button.
Metric name
Scope
Event parameter (exactly)
Unit of measurement
SR Results Count
Event
sr_results_count
Standard

Instructions

  1. Metric name = SR Results Count.
  2. Scope = Event.
  3. Event parameter = sr_results_count.
  4. Unit of measurement = Standard.
  5. Save.

Audience

Where

Admin → Property → Data displayAudiencesNew audienceCreate a custom audience.
Create an audience that captures every session containing Search Ready activity.

Instructions

  • Audience name: SR-engaged sessions (změňte text Untitled audience)
  • Description: Sessions with Search Ready activity (sr_engine=true).
  • Additional audience settings → Membership duration: 30 days (GA4 default; this is mandatory to fill in even for session scope).
Condition (Include users when):

First, in the condition header on the far right, change the Condition scoping setting to "Within the same session".

Build a single condition group containing two events joined by an OR operator:

  • Click Add condition → select the view_search_results event.
Under it, click Add parameter → parameter sr_engine → exactly matches → value true.
  • In the same group, click OR → select the select_item event.
Under it, click Add parameter → parameter sr_engine → exactly matches → value true.
  • For the condition group, switch the scope (the icon in the top right of the condition) to "Within the same session".

The result in words: Include users when view_search_results or select_item occurs within the same session, and at the same time, the event has sr_engine = true.

(The "add to cart from Search Ready" action is technically a select_item with the parameter sr_action = add_to_cart, so the second condition covers it automatically).

If the event / parameter does not appear in the autocomplete suggestions: The GA4 UI only suggests events and parameters that have previously been received by the property. If Search Ready has not tracked anything on the website yet, you might not be able to select view_search_results or sr_engine.

  • Either type the name manually (GA4 usually allows you to enter a custom event/parameter name directly into the field), or
  • Wait until the website sends the first SR events, and create the audience afterwards.

Note: The audience only begins populating from the moment it is created – therefore, create it as soon as possible.

Data retention

Where

Admin → Property → Data collection and modificationData retention.

Instructions

  1. Change Event data retention to the highest possible value: for a standard (free) property, this is 14 months.
  2. Save
